Enhanced English Learning Through Augmented Reality at Elementary Level
English in elementary schools play a vital role in the development of children’s English language and critical thinking skills, as well as their creativity and self-confidence. The use of technology in education can provide students with an engaging learning experience, allowing them to stay engaged in the subject without being distracted. This study investigates how AR technology can help elementary school students in grades 1 to learn English. The AR application, created with Unity and Vuforia, allows students to interact with 3D objects representing words from the English vocabulary, facilitating an immersive learning experience that encourages visual and auditory engagement. In this study, we used the ADDIE Method to design, develop and evaluate the learning or training program to be created. A mixed-method approach was also used to assess the AR application’s efficacy. Fifty students were given a pre-test and a post-test to gauge their progress in vocabulary usage, pronunciation, and recognition. A User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) was used to evaluate the application’s usability and degree of engagement from the viewpoint of the younger users. Significant improvements in the students’ language skills were revealed by statistical analysis of the test data, and there was a strong link between higher scores and using the AR program. The results showed that the pre-test score for 50 students averaged 58.32, and the post-test score averaged 81.64. The high satisfaction and usability ratings were further validated by the UEQ results, also demonstrating the potential of AR to produce a meaningful educational experience.
