Biodiesel production by enzymatic transesterification of mixture of fish and chicken waste fat with isoamyl alcohol

In order to reduce the cost of biodiesel and the development of sustainable production, it is necessary to explore the possibility of using fatty waste. For this, waste poultry fat and fish oil are prospective. A mixture of fish and chicken waste fat in a ratio of 1:1.5 by volume is suitable to synthesize the biodiesel fuel by transesterification with isoamyl alcohol as an acyl receptor and Lipozyme RM IM as a heterogeneous enzymatic catalyst. By applying the Response surface methodology (RSM) obtained optimal transesterification conditions are the following: the molar ratio of alcohol to fat is 1:4, the amount of biocatalyst is 10% (based on oil weight), the reaction temperature is 37°C, and the reaction time is 4 h. The transesterification degree greater than 98% is achieved in the optimal conditions. Calorific value of biodiesel is 39.71 ± 0.15 MJ/kg, kinematic viscosity is 4.83 ± 0.014 mm2/s and density is 875.67 ± 0.23 kg/m3. Properties of the obtained biodiesel meet the requirements for biodiesel according to the requirements of EN ISO 14214 and ASTM D6751 standards, indicating that the produced biodiesel can be used as a suitable fuel source in place of petroleum-derived fuels.
