Ferroelectric catalysis: driving enhanced reactivity through polarization control

Abstract Leveraging ferroelectric polarization is a viable method for boosting catalytic efficiency. The ferroelectric effect has shown enormous promise in enhancing the efficiency rate of catalysis, such as water splitting, CO 2 reduction, and hydrogen production, in conventional catalytic systems like oxides and perovskites. By offering improved control over surface polarization, charge separation, and defect engineering, emerging materials; such as heterostructures and 2D materials are significantly expanding the possibilities of catalysis. The significance of ferroelectric materials in catalysis is examined in this review, with particular attention paid to how their switchable polarization can improve catalytic performance in various applications.
