Technology absorption and adaption in early reinforced concrete buildings in China: a case Study of Tsao Hall in Soochow University
Tsao Hall in Soochow University is a typical representative of modern reinforced concrete buildings in Suzhou. It reflects the experimental exploration in the early stage of the introduction of this Western modern architectural technology. Through detailed historical research and on-site investigations, the paper traces the construction and evolution of Tsao Hall, thereby demonstrating the possibilities provided by the absorption of new technologies for architectural activities, and revealing how technologies were locally adapted in the unique social and economic context of Suzhou. This dynamic absorption and adaptation process was fed back to many aspects such as artistic style, architectural space, material and structure. The paper attempts to summarize the commonalities and flexibility therein, which will provide a theoretical basis for the evaluation of the scientific value and the selection of intervention measures in conservation and rehabilitation practice of modern architecture heritage.
