Listening to the Daoing in the Morning
Abstract This study explores the concept of multi-layered values and reconsiders the formation of the self (“I”) as fundamentally relational and dynamic (“i-ing”). It discusses how AI and animals can be seen as “allocated i” and critiques the moral imperatives imposed by the totalitarian “WE” referred to by Yasuo Deguchi. Drawing on Daoist thought, it proposes the “daoing” of technology – not its moralization – as a way to support better ways of living. Emphasizing gender, sociality, and more-than-human relationships, the study envisions a post-anthropocentric future in which technology, like AI, co-evolves with humans, animals, and the environment in pursuit of a shared Dao.
