Open science in Colombia: comparative analysis of its practices and indicators for monitoring and evaluation

Purpose The purpose of this study is to create a comparative analyisis of the most frequent Open Science practices used by Colombian researchers in different areas of knowledge, from which a correlation between meanings and nature of each of these areas is suggested as a basis for a set of indicators for monitoring and evaulation of Open Science. Design/methodology/approach The methodology consisted of a quantitative approach, with an analytical and comparative type of research, based on a survey of Colombian researchers registered in the Scienti Platform of the Colombian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. This survey established various practices in design, data collection, research development and communication. A total of 2,398 completed surveys were collected based on simple random sampling, exceeding the expected value of 2,316, which guarantees a 95% confidence, 2% error margin. Findings The practices of open scientific knowledge most frequently used by researchers in the areas of social sciences, humanities and engineering were the access to citation indexes and research results, which exceed 50%. Practices of social appropriation of knowledge were evident in all knowledge areas, with percentages below 30%, with social sciences and humanities researchers standing out as the scientific group that uses them the most. Open communication practices were found in all areas of knowledge, although no more than 45%. Researchers in engineering and the humanities were the ones who made the most use of practices supported by digital platforms. Originality/value The results obtained about Open Science practices for all areas of knowledge suggest the need to further strengthen them to make Open Science a regular practice in science, technology and innovation ecosystems. The authors propose a set of indicators for the monitoring and evaluation of Open Science practices, considering the levels of implementation, both individual and institutional, according to each area of knowledge, identifying the indicators as well that allow the progress of Open Science to be assessed.
