Control-Oriented Modeling of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines
This paper presents a control-oriented, computationally efficient dynamic model for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), developed via the Lagrangian approach. The model simplifies the full system dynamics while capturing essential behaviors across four dominant degrees of freedom (heave, pitch, roll, and tower deflection) under thruster-based active station-keeping. By assuming zero yaw and moderate environmental conditions, the model enables focused analysis of core platform dynamics without excessive computational burden. Numerical simulations under quiescent water conditions validate the model’s dynamic responses, highlighting key coupling effects and natural restoration behaviors. This foundational work establishes a basis for future studies on active control strategy development and realistic environmental modeling for next-generation FOWTs.
