Low-Profile Compact Integrated 16-Port MIMO Antenna Covering Sub-6 GHz and Millimeter-Wave 5G Bands

A compact and low profile 16-port integrated multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna system for sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave 5G spectrum is designed on square substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity. Eight ports of the designed MIMO antenna system operate at the frequency of 3.5 GHz for sub-6 GHz radiations, while the other eight ports radiate electromagnetic waves at 28 GHz for 5G millimeter wave spectrum. The microwave and millimeter wave antenna elements are integrated strategically inside a square SIW cavity in order to have high inter-port isolations. The sub-6 GHz antenna elements are excited through the coaxial feedlines, while the millimeter wave antenna elements are microstrip fed. The modified TE110 mode is utilized for radiations at microwave frequencies, whereas higher order hybrid modes such as TE510 and TE530 modes are used for radiations at millimeter wave frequencies. High inter-port isolations are observed at both the operating bands among different ports of the MIMO antenna system.
