Top 100 most cited papers on neurosensory deficits and orthognathic surgery: Bibliometric analysis

• Identified the top cited articles on neurosensory disturbance and orthognathic surgery • Most of the articles discussed inferior alveolar nerve and split sagittal osteotomy • US and Japan leaded in publication numbers, citation counts and impactful institutions This bibliometric analysis aimed to report and analyze the top 100 most cited articles related to neurosensory disturbance (NSD) and orthognathic surgery. The Web of Science database was searched for peer-reviewed articles and reviews in English that focused on NSDs and orthognathic surgery using specific keywords. A descriptive data analysis, alongside graphical visualization, was conducted on the retrieved data. The assessed variables included citation counts, publication years, countries, Journals, affiliations, authors, and keywords. Articles were further categorized based on their topics and the types of osteotomies discussed. The studies were cited a total of 4301 times. This list of highly cited articles represents a collaborative effort involving 23 nations and 121 institutions, with the USA and Japan being the most influential countries. The majority of the research was published in high-impact journals specializing in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery had the highest number of publications. The highly cited articles featured 351 coauthors, while the most frequently listed keywords were “inferior alveolar nerve” and “recovery”. This bibliometric study provides an analytic map for scientific literature published on NSD and orthognathic surgery, offering valuable insights for researchers, clinicians, students, and decision-makers. Future bibliometric analyses are periodically recommended to keep pace with dynamic data updates.
