Spindle Cell Carcinoma: A Rare and Aggressive Variant of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Upper Lip
Spindle cell carcinoma (SpCC), also known as sarcomatoid carcinoma, is a rare biphasic malignant neoplasm ranging variably from reactive to malignant making it critical and relatively challenging where tumors have areas of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) admixed with areas of pleomorphic tumor. It is a rare variant of SCC characterized by malignant spindle-shaped cells resembling sarcomas. Spindle cell lesions of the head and neck are diverse with great clinical and biological variety. They tend to show rapid progression with a high recurrence rate and the ability to metastasize, all of which contribute to their poor prognosis.
