Commentary: Social Determinants of Mental Health: Social Psychiatry’s Critical Role in Medicine and Healthcare
The impact of social factors on physical and mental health has been recognized for centuries, with ancient Greeks and 19 th -century scholars like Rudolf Virchow acknowledging their significance. However, modern medicine has often undervalued these social determinants. Recent literature highlights the profound influence of socioeconomic, environmental, and cultural factors on mental health, linking issues such as racism, early-life traumas, social isolation, poverty, homelessness, and limited access to healthcare with poorer mental health outcomes. Comprehensive reviews have found significant associations between these social determinants and psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and dementia. The interplay of these factors creates a complex burden on mental health, emphasizing the need for holistic approaches in clinical practice. Addressing social determinants through regular assessment, incorporating them into treatment plans, and integrating social determinants of mental health-focused psychotherapies can improve mental health outcomes. Collaborative efforts among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers are essential to promote mental health equity and reduce disparities.
