Expansion Obstacles of Faba Bean Cultivation from Farmers’ Viewpoints in Selected Egyptian Governorates

This research aimed mainly to identify obstacles to the Expansion of Faba Bean Cultivation from the Viewpoint of Farmers in selected Egyptian Governorates. The most important results were: 1- Production Obstacles: The research findings indicated that the most significant obstacle across the studied governorates, according to the mean relative importance of each obstacle in the three governorates, was the high cost of all production inputs, with a mean relative importance of 93.8%. 2-Marketing Obstacles: The findings revealed that the most critical obstacle identified across the studied governorates, based on the mean relative importance, was the absence of an indicative price announcement for faba beans, with a mean relative importance of 89.4%. 3-Extension-Related Obstacles: The findings revealed that the most critical obstacle identified across the studied governorates, based on the mean relative importance, was the lack of participation by rural leaders in planning extension programs, with a mean relative importance of 81.6%. 4-Farmer-Related Obstacles: The findings revealed that the most critical obstacle identified across the studied governorates, based on the mean relative importance, was farmers’ tendency to prioritize fulfilling household needs, which directed them toward cultivating wheat at the expense of faba beans, with a mean relative importance of 82%. 5-Environmental and Climatic Obstacles: The findings revealed that the most critical obstacle identified across the studied governorates, based on the mean relative importance, was the high humidity that increases the prevalence of diseases such as downy mildew and rust in faba beans, with a mean relative importance of 88.1%.
