Family adoption program – A way forward as a unique opportunity for competency-based medical education in community medicine
Abstract Introduction: Family adoption program (FAP) was introduced by the National Medical Commission from batch 2021. It puts many challenges for its proper implementation; however, it can be a unique opportunity for teachers as well as students for teaching/learning various competencies of community medicine. Objectives: Of this study were (1) to document the teaching–learning opportunities by mapping the competencies of community medicine under FAP, (2) to list specific learning objectives (SLOs) with appropriate teaching–learning methods (TLM), and (3) to suggest assessment methods (AM) accordingly. Methodology: This was desk review exercise. Competencies were mapped as per Volume II of Competency-based Undergraduate Curriculum through desk review and brainstorming exercise. SLOs were prepared with appropriate lesson plan using various TLMs and AMs. Outcome: A total of 50 competencies (16 in phase I, 14 in phase II, and 20 in phase III) were identified as per criticality/relevance and feasibility at the institutional level. They were arranged domainwise with level of competency. SLOs were framed, and domainwise lesson plans were suggested using various techniques such as demonstration, observation, assistance, and performance (DOAP) and role-plays. Family and case presentation with SNAPPS (summarizing, narrowing, analyzing, probing, planning the management and selecting topic for self-directed learning)/one minute preceptor and direct observation were suggested as formative assessment methods. Conclusion: FAP can be used as a unique opportunity for better teaching–learning of CBME with proper lesson plan as well as for formative assessment of students for various competencies of all domains.
