Experimental study on the machinability of natural fiber-based hybrid composite with nanofiller incorporation

In various industrial applications, composites reinforced with natural fibers are gaining recognition as a viable alternative to those made with synthetic fibers, owing to their multiple benefits. Nonetheless, practical implementations of these composites necessitate additional processes to finalize the assembly of the components or parts. This study concentrates on the preparation of hybrid composites composed of glass and jute fibers, alongside epoxy composites integrated with nanofillers, and examines the machinability of these composites. The composites were prepared using the hand lay-up technique, incorporating five layers of fibers. Three types of nanoparticles such as Al 2 O 3 , ZnO, and TiO 2 of 3 wt% were incorporated into the composites. Machinability was assessed considering the delamination factor and surface roughness. Analytical studies of machinability were conducted using MINITAB 2019 software. The findings show that the addition of nanofillers considerably increases the machining performance of the composite material. Comparing among three different nanofillers it was found that the composite contains the ZnO nanoparticle provided the significant improvement with least overall surface roughness and moderate delamination. On the contrary, TiO 2 incorporated composite material showed least delamination. The optimized machining parameters (cutting speed = 3000 rpm, feed rate = 93 mm/min, depth of cut = 3 mm) resulted in a minimum surface roughness of 2.58 μm and a delamination factor of 1.08, confirming the effectiveness of TiO₂ nanofiller incorporation. • Jute/Glass/Epoxy composites were prepared with 3 wt% nanoparticles incorporation. • Metal oxides such as Al 2 O 3 , ZnO, TiO 2 were used as nanoparticle. • Machinability were investigated based on milling operations. • Analytical studies of machinability were conducted using MINITAB 2019 software. • ZnO incorporated sample provides least overall surface roughness.
