Introducing Enhanced Rock Weathering Technology for Atmospheric CO 2 Removal: Quantifying and Certifying Carbon Removal

Limitations in the effectiveness of CO 2 reduction at emission sources highlight the increasing importance of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies for direct atmospheric CO 2 removal.Among these, enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is gaining attention as a promising negative emission technology that accelerates rock weathering to remove CO 2 from the atmosphere. However, methodologies for carbon removal quantification based on reliable monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) are essential for the practical implementation of ERW.In this study, we investigated MRV and carbon quantification methods for domestic ERW applications in Korea. We also reviewed certification methodologies based on life cycle assessment (LCA) for ERW in the voluntary carbon market (VCM).The study introduced a quantification of the net carbon removal amount and a strategy to access the international VCM via certification platforms. This research will be helpful to establish a basis for carbon quantification in ERW and contribute to strategies for Korean companies entering and commercializing the international carbon market.
