Super-wideband ultrathin infrared shield

A multilayer patterned graphite-based ultrathin geometry can provide super-wideband absorption in the frequency range covering 20.60–74.60 THz to provide the 54 THz absorption bandwidth. The dispersive properties of the dielectric material with which graphite patterns are formed can further extend the absorption bandwidth to more than 100 THz. The absorber structure utilizes the graphite material composite with the dielectrics to provide the ultrathin, metal-free geometry. The absorber structure remains polarization insensitive and can provide a stable response over 60° of the incident angle for all the polarizations of the incident wave. The operation of the proposed absorber is validated using the electrical circuit analysis based on the transmission line method. The shielding effectiveness analysis shows that the proposed absorber can provide effective shielding for absorption of more than 80 dB, depending on the thickness of the graphite layer being used as the reflector in the absorber geometry. Also, the reflection-based SE remains less than 1 dB in the passband, proving the proposed absorber suitable for electromagnetic shielding and packaging applications in the infrared range.
