ADVANCING WORKFORCE AGILITY IN HIGHER EDUCATION: A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR FOSTERING ACADEMIC RESILIENCE AND INNOVATION IN THE VUCA ERA
The higher education sector is undergoing rapid and profound transformation, increasingly characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity-the VUCA world. This disruption challenges the traditional academic model, once dened by disciplinary autonomy, stability, and clear career trajectories. Contemporary academicians now face multifaceted demands including digital pedagogy, competitive research funding, societal impact requirements, program management complexity, and shifting academic cultures. These expanding roles contribute to growing stress, burnout, and role ambiguity. In response, many higher education institutions have adopted Agile management philosophies, originally developed in software development, to foster organizational adaptability and responsiveness. However, the concept of the “Agile Academician” - an individual scholar adopting Agile principles as a mindset for professional resilience and purposeful innovation - remains underexplored. This conceptual paper addresses this research gap by proposing a comprehensive framework linking Agile management principles with core academic competencies and VUCA context outcomes. Drawing on interdisciplinary literature from higher education studies, organizational psychology, and Agile theory, the study conceptualizes the Agile Academician through key competencies such as recursive self-reection, adaptive planning, collaborative engagement, and outcome orientation within teaching, research, and service.
