Antimicrobial Efficacy Of Intracanal Medicaments With Nanoparticles In Primary Teeth
To evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of calcium hydroxide + calcium hydroxide nanoparticles and zinc oxide + zinc oxide nanoparticles as intracanal medicaments in primary teeth. 40 extracted human primary teeth were included in the study. Of these, 20 teeth were contaminated with an E. Fecalis biofilm for 7 days and CFU count was determined as baseline reading. These 20 teeth were divided into 4 groups, Calcium hydrixide, calcium hydroxide nanoparticles, Zinc oxide nanoparticles and zinc oxide eugenol. Intracanal medicament was placed in the canals. CFU count was determined on day 7 and day 14. The remaining 20 teeth were again divided into four groups as mentioned above and intracanal medicament was placed in root canal. They were subjected to SEM analysis to determine the penetration depth of medicament into the dentin. A statistically significant difference was noted in the CFU count reduction on day 7 in calcium hydroxide nanoparticles, Zinc oxide nanoparticles and Zinc oxide groups. Highest penetration depth of medicament was noted in calcium hydroxide nanoparticle group The authors concluded that the antibacterial efficacy and penetration depth into dentin improved on incorporating calcium hydroxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles.
