Application Of A Droplet Isolation Device In Ultrasonic Scaling

To enhance the control of aerosol production during ultrasonic scaling using a droplet isolation device, providing a safer treatment environment for both patients and medical staff. This study utilized a droplet isolation device made of transparent material, featuring a cylindrical shape with a gradually increasing diameter from top to bottom. A total of 78 subjects were included and randomly assigned into two groups using a random number table method, with each group consisting of 13 patients exhibiting the same severity of periodontitis. During scaling, patients with mild, moderate, and severe periodontitis underwent ultrasonic scaling under two conditions: using both the droplet isolation device and low-volume suction (experimental group) versus using low-volume suction alone (control group). The results demonstrated significant differences (p<0.05) in overall air and face shield contamination (cfu/piece) between the groups. The control group (low-volume suction alone) had a significantly higher average contamination level (90.05) compared to the experimental group (droplet isolation device + low-volume suction) with an average of 0.05. The evaluation of this newly developed droplet isolation device in clinical practice showed statistically significant effectiveness. The findings indicate that this device serves as an effective supplementary protective measure in ultrasonic scaling procedures.
