Evaluating The Whitening Efficacy Of Novel Toothpaste By Image Analysis

To evaluate the rapid teeth whitening effect of a novel whitening toothpaste with carbomer and blue pigment using digital image analysis A single-brushing, examiner-blind, in vivo study with a 2-treatment crossover design was conducted. The test group used a silica-based whitening toothpaste containing carbomer and blue pigment, while the control group used a silica-based toothpaste without carbomer and blue pigment. Images of four central incisors were captured using the white light digital imaging system both before and after brushing. The contours around the four central incisors were manually outlined, and color parameters were extracted through image analysis. Subject-wise mean scores were calculated for comparison. 20 volunteers completed the study. Digital image analysis showed a statistically significant reduction in b* values (p < 0.05) for the test toothpaste (-1.08 units) compared to the control toothpaste (-0.10 units). The carbomer in the test toothpaste facilitated the deposition of blue pigment onto the tooth surface during brushing, altering the optical properties of the teeth and resulting in a whitening effect. A single use of the novel whitening toothpaste with carbomer and blue pigment effectively whitens teeth by modifying the optical properties of the tooth surface.
