Evaluation The Association Between Glucose Metabolism measures And Periodontal Inflammation

To investigate the associations of impaired glucose metabolism with periodontal inflammation in pre-diabetes patients. 171 pre-diabetes patients aged 30-65 years were included in a cross-sectional analysis. Periodontal inflammation of the patients were assessed by bleeding on gentle probing( BOP) of the sulcus at 6 sites per tooth, Plaque index(PLI), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL) and glucose metabolism indexes of Fasting glucose (FG), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), HbA1c and homeostasis model assessments of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) were measured. The association of glucose metabolism and periodontal inflammation was investigate by binary logistic regressions analysis. Patients were divided into high BOP (H-BOP) group (with the percentage of teeth with bleeding on probing equal to or greater than the median BOP results) and low BOP(L-BOP) group( less than the median BOP results).PD and CAL in the H-BOP group were significantly higher than those in L-BOP group (P<0.05), FG and OGTT levels in the H-BOP group were significantly higher than those in L-BOP group.Logistic regression analysis showed that after adjustment of age, gender, smoking status, hypertension and BMI, IFG and OGTT were associated with H-BOP (OR=1.33, 1.45), and HOMR-IR was also associated with high BOP (OR=1.20) . Impaired glucose metabolism measures were associated with BOP, a marker of periodontal inflammation in pre-diabetes patients.
