Clinical Applications Of Intraoral Scanning Vs. Silicone Impressions

While intraoral scanning (IOS) is widely adopted, systematic comparisons with silicone impressions (SI) regarding indications and clinical utility remain limited. This study aimed to define their complementary roles, addressing gaps in evidence-based selection criteria. Technical characteristics, workflow efficiency, and patient outcomes of IOS (digital accuracy, reduced chair time) and SI (edge fidelity, material stability) were analyzed through literature review and case comparisons. IOS showed advantages in orthodontics, implants, and aesthetic restorations (accuracy ±0.02 mm, 40% faster), yet required high-cost equipment and operator skill. SI excelled in fixed prostheses (margin error <50 μm) but caused discomfort (15%-20% gag reflex incidence). A clinical selection framework was established to guide optimal model choice. Future research should focus on integrating both technologies for enhanced outcomes.
