Efficacy Of Total Glucosides Of Paeony In Oral Lichen Planus

This study aims to assess the clinical effects and safety of treating oral lichen planus (OLP) with Total Glucosides of Paeony(TGP) using a modified scoring system, and to explore the link between T-helper cell cytokine changes and treatment efficacy in OLP patients. This study evaluated the efficacy of TGP treatment in a cohort of 38 OLP patients by using modifed RHE score system. Serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-17A) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, and IL-10) were quantified in 27 OLP patients and 24 healthy controls. Cytokine concentrations were assessed using MilliplexTM bead-based immunoassays at baseline and following 24 weeks of TGP administration in the clinical group. The serum levels of both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines were significantly lower in patients with OLP compared to healthy volunteers. Following a 24-week treatment with TGP, there was an increase in serum TNF-α and IL-6 levels, while IL-5 levels decreased compared to baseline. However, no significant correlations were observed between the improvement in clinical scores and serum cytokine levels. TGP appears to be an effective treatment for patients with OLP. We hypothesize that the therapeutic response in OLP patients undergoing TGP treatment may be associated with changes in TNF-α, IL-5, and IL-6 secretion levels, providing a theoretical foundation for the use of TGP in treatment.
