Radiation Dose Of CBCT And MDCT With Different Exposure Parameters

The aim of this study was to measure effective doses of cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) and multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) in different exposure parameters. The human-equivalent head phantom equipped with thermoluminescent dosimeter detectors was used to calculate the average tissue absorbed dose, equivalent dose and effective dose of CBCT(i-CAT, Kavo) and MDCT(NeuViz128, Neusoft) under different scanning protocols. The effective dose was calculated using the tissue-weighting factor recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection in 2007. The effective dose (ICRP 2007) ranged from 144 to 337μSv for CBCT scanning, and 2287 to 3349 μSv for MDCT, with different resolution and FOV parameters. The salivary glands and thyroid received the highest absorbed doses from CBCT, while the highest absorbed doses were found in salivary glands and oral mucosa in MDCT scanning. Compared with the MDCT scanning, CBCT were seen as dental X-ray in relatively low doses of a 3D imaging technology. The effective dose of CBCT could be significantly decreased by using the low-dose technique.

Abstract
