Comparison Of Dental Arch Dimensions According To Gender And Malocclusion
This study aimed to evaluate differences in ICW and IMW across genders and malocclusion classes in Malays. This retrospective study utilized pretreatment dental casts (n=242; 110 males, 132 females) from a polyclinic in a higher institution. Digital measurements of ICW and IMW were acquired via a 3D scanner, and analyzed statistically using SPSS v30. Statistically significant gender differences were noted; males had wider maxillary and mandibular intermolar widths (mean differences: 2.9 mm and 2.6 mm respectively, p<0.001). Intercanine width was significantly wider in Class I compared to Class II Division 2 (p=0.002) and Class III malocclusions (p=0.040) in the maxillary arch. In mandibular arches, Class I exhibited greater intercanine width than Class II Division 2 (p=0.035). Conversely, mandibular intermolar width was significantly wider in Class III than in Class I malocclusion (p=0.008). Significant gender-based differences were identified, highlighting greater intermolar dimensions in males. Males exhibit broader dental arches compared to females, and dental arch dimensions significantly vary among malocclusion classes, emphasizing tailored orthodontic approaches for effective treatment outcomes.
