Management Of Dentine Hypersensitivity: Survey Of Dental Healthcare Professionals
Previous studies have indicated that dental healthcare professionals (DHCP) may be uncertain about the etiology, diagnosis, and effective management of dentine hypersensitivity (DH). The purpose of this research was to explore the knowledge and understanding of DH by DHCPs. An 8-element questionnaire was made available to 9500 participants of a global (US, EU, Middle East, Africa and South America) online webinar (March 2025). The questionnaire consisted of 8 questions to understand how often DHCPs encounter patients with DH, the extent of challenges faced by DHCPs in discussing DH with their patients, and treatment recommendations 2104 responses to the questionnaire were received (a response rate of 22%). 38% DHCPs indicated that they encounter patients with DH “weekly”; 56% agree that it is an underdiagnosed condition; 60% strongly agree that it can have a significant impact on quality of life; 45% strongly agree that the impact of DH on quality of life should be included in the DH definition; 76% strongly agree/agree that DHCPs find it challenging to discuss DH with their patients, and believe that there is a need for updated guidelines. 95% DHCPs strongly agree/agree that the use of a desensitizing toothpaste is an effective first-line treatment for DH. Although DH is widespread and can have a significant impact on people’s quality of life, it is an underdiagnosed condition and DHCPs face challenges in diagnosis. This survey demonstrates that updated guidance is required to addresses barriers to diagnosis and the management of DH.
