Digital Scan-Post Assisted Custom Fiber Post-Core Crown Restoration
This case report presents a novel digital workflow for custom fiber post-core crown restoration using a scan-post technique, addressing accuracy challenges in traditional impression methods. A 54-year-old female presented with a fractured maxillary incisor (tooth 11) after trauma and root canal therapy. Clinical examination revealed 1/3 residual crown structure and deep overbite. A digital protocol was implemented: (1) post-space preparation with matched drills, (2) intraoral scanning using a scan-post (3Shape™, 3Shape A/S) to capture precise morphology, (3) CAD/CAM design and milling of a fiber-reinforced resin post-core (Post™, OYA) and zirconia crown. The post-core exhibited passive fit confirmed by radiography, and the crown was luted with resin cement. This technique eliminates analog impression distortions by directly digitizing post-space anatomy via scan-posts. The fiber-reinforced resin’s modulus mimics dentin, reducing fracture risks. Compared to prefabricated posts, custom designs enhance adaptation, though limitations exist for atypically sized root canals. he scan-post protocol enhances precision and efficiency in post-core crown rehabilitation. Future development of expanded scan-post systems may broaden applicability, offering a promising shift toward fully digital workflows in complex restorations.
