Digital Replication And Transfer Of Occlusal Relationship In Dentition Defect

This clinical case demonstrates how the implementation of digital workflow integration-encompassing intraoral scanning and CAD/CAM fabrication, which reduced required clinical appointments through single-visit prosthodontic rehabilitation, concurrently improving functional outcomes and patient satisfaction metrics. A male patient presented with multiple missing teeth affecting masticatory function. Examination revealed varying alveolar ridge resorption and loss of occlusal relationships. Remaining teeth had defects like residual roots. The treatment plan utilized traditional occlusal splints combined with digital technology to replicate and transfer the occlusal relationship. Digital workflows integrated three intraoral/lab scans (teeth preparation, occlusal splint seated intraorally and alginate-derived plaster cast)(STL) via EXOCAD (Dental CAD) for simultaneous CAD/CAM fabrication of crowns and frameworks, achieving single-visit prosthetic rehabilitation. The case adopted digital technology given the patient's complex oral anatomy and limitations of traditional methods, which are prone to human errors in model making and occlusal transfer, especially in complex partial edentulism cases, often resulting in ill-fitting restorations. Digital technology integrated multi-source data to simultaneously design and manufacture crowns and frameworks, enhancing stability and precision. High-precision CAD/CAMenables restorations to fit closely to abutments and rest regions, minimizing chairside adjustments. Precise replication and transfer of occlusal relationship ensures occlusal stability, decreasing prosthesis loosening and patient discomfort while delivering enhanced comfort and long-term stability. This validated digital prosthodontic protocol demonstrates enhanced adaptation accuracy through precision CAD/CAM, enabling single-stage crown-RPD rehabilitation with fewer chairside appointments and decreased treatment duration, while achieving patient satisfaction.

Abstract

This clinical case demonstrates how the implementation of digital workflow integration-encompassing intraoral scanning and CAD/CAM fabrication, which reduced required clinical appointments through single-visit prosthodontic rehabilitation, concurrently improving functional outcomes and patient satisfaction metrics. A male patient presented with multiple missing teeth affecting masticatory function. Examination revealed varying alveolar ridge resorption and loss of occlusal relationships. Remaining teeth had defects like residual roots. The treatment plan utilized traditional occlusal splints combined with digital technology to replicate and transfer the occlusal relationship. Digital workflows integrated three intraoral/lab scans (teeth preparation, occlusal splint seated intraorally and alginate-derived plaster cast)(STL) via EXOCAD (Dental CAD) for simultaneous CAD/CAM fabrication of crowns and frameworks, achieving single-visit prosthetic rehabilitation. The case adopted digital technology given the patient's complex oral anatomy and limitations of traditional methods, which are prone to human errors in model making and occlusal transfer, especially in complex partial edentulism cases, often resulting in ill-fitting restorations. Digital technology integrated multi-source data to simultaneously design and manufacture crowns and frameworks, enhancing stability and precision. High-precision CAD/CAMenables restorations to fit closely to abutments and rest regions, minimizing chairside adjustments. Precise replication and transfer of occlusal relationship ensures occlusal stability, decreasing prosthesis loosening and patient discomfort while delivering enhanced comfort and long-term stability. This validated digital prosthodontic protocol demonstrates enhanced adaptation accuracy through precision CAD/CAM, enabling single-stage crown-RPD rehabilitation with fewer chairside appointments and decreased treatment duration, while achieving patient satisfaction.
