Correlation Between The Dental Cement And Chronological Age: Forensic Aspect

The aim of this research was to establish an equation for estimating dental age in adolescents, adults and the elderly based on the thickness of deposited dental cement. The study sample consisted of 206 donated single-rooted and multi-rooted teeth from individuals of both sexes. The roots were cross sectioned using the ISOMET 1000 slicer at the apical, middle, and cervical parts. Measurements of the cement thickness on 1,236 sections were carried out using a light microscope and camera. A statistically significant decrease in the mean cement thickness (SDC) from apical to cervical sections was found (F=480.8, p<0.001). A significantly greater SDC was found in the multi-rooted group compared to the single-rooted group (F=2.25, p=0.047). A significant difference in SDC was also found among tooth types (F=2.41, p=0.002). A significantly greater SDC was observed in teeth with crown destruction compared to intact ones (F=18.46, p<0.001). With ageing, the dental cement thickens in the apical third of the roots. The accuracy of the estimation depends on the type of tooth and the degree of crown damage. An equation was developed for estimating dental age in adults and elderly individuals based on measurements of the deposited dental cement.
