Implant Bar Attachment Restoration With Peek Material: A Case Report
This case involves a 55-year-old male patient with over a decade of maxillary posterior tooth loss, which significantly affected his masticatory function, leading him to seek treatment at our hospital. The complexity of this case lies in the long-term maxillary posterior tooth loss, which induces complex oral issues such as alveolar bone resorption and tooth migration. A restoration plan combining a bar-attachment overdenture with a removable framework and the application of novel PEEK (polyether ether ketone) material was employed. The patient presented with an edentulous maxilla. After a comprehensive oral examination, four implants were planned and placed. The restoration approach involved a bar-attachment overdenture combined with a removable framework. The results showed that post-restoration, the patient’s masticatory function was significantly restored (adaptation period reduced to 1 week), the denture exhibited excellent retention and stability (no loosening or dislodgement occurred), the processing error of the PEEK material was less than 0.05 mm, and its wear resistance was enhanced by 30% compared to traditional metal materials. Patient satisfaction reached 95%, with both aesthetics and function meeting expectations. The innovation of this case lies in the first validation of the feasibility of PEEK material in bar-attachment overdenture restorations. This provides an innovative solution for long-term edentulous rehabilitation and offers a reference for managing similar cases of long-term maxillary posterior tooth loss or partially edentulous conditions. Future studies should expand the sample size to optimize design parameters.
