Digital Planning In Prosthetic And Restorative Dentistry: New Horizons
Modern dentistry is experiencing a digital shift that enhances diagnostics and restorative workflows. Traditional analog techniques are increasingly replaced by high-precision 3D imaging and CBCT-based virtual planning, crucial for cases demanding accuracy in both function and aesthetics. Case Summary Patient: Male, 38 years old Chief Complaint: Worn anterior teeth, sensitivity during meals Diagnosis: • Generalized anterior tooth wear • ∼2 mm loss in vertical dimension • Thin enamel, no caries • Stable periodontium, good hygiene Treatment Plan: Provisional restoration using the Injection Molding technique with flowable composite, followed by definitive prosthetic rehabilitation. Workflow: • Full digital records: IOS (Primescan), CBCT, photo protocol • Digital smile design and wax-up in Smilecloud • 3D printed model → Exaclear silicone key fabrication • Segmental composite injection using GC G-ænial Universal Injectable • Isolation with OptraDam, total-etch protocol with OptiBond FL • Final finishing and polishing post-polymerization Outcome: High aesthetic fidelity, natural contours, no flash, and functional stability at 3-month follow-up. The patient reported significant improvement in comfort and smile satisfaction. Injection Molding is a minimally invasive, reversible, and biologically respectful method that bridges virtual planning with clinical execution. It allows clinicians to test VDO and esthetics before committing to final restorations. Though technique-sensitive, its accuracy, efficiency, and patient-centered outcomes make it an invaluable tool in modern prosthetic workflows.
