Bioactive And Antimicrobial Effects Of Green Tea In Periodontal Therapy
To evaluate the antimicrobial properties of green tea as a supplementary treatment for periodontal disease. Phytochemical screening was conducted on Camellia sinensis leaves to identify bioactive compounds. Four solvent extracts (methanol, ethanol, acetone, and water) were prepared and tested for antimicrobial properties against periodontal pathogens. Dental swabs from patients were collected to assess antibacterial activity. The inhibitory effects of each extract were compared, with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test for antimicrobial activity. Effectiveness of samples was calculated and evaluated. The ethanolic extract of green tea exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity against all tested periodontal pathogens. Among the extracts, it also demonstrated the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Porphyromonas gingivalis. These results highlight the potential of green tea as an effective adjunctive therapy for periodontal disease. Ethanolic green tea extract showed strong antimicrobial activity against periodontal pathogens, particularly Porphyromonas gingivalis. This suggests its potential as an adjunctive therapy for periodontal disease.
