Oral Rehabilitation Treatment For Acromegaly: A Case Report
Acromegaly is a rare endocrine disorder that often leads to severe consequences in the orofacial system, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. A 65-year-old male patient presented with a complaint of missing teeth for 10 years and requested dentures. The patient reported that 10 years ago, some teeth were extracted due to mobility, and the existing dentures became non-functional as the remaining teeth recently fell out. He was referred to our hospital from another clinic due to the “lack of an appropriately sized tray.” Facial and physical Examination: The patient displayed a broad skull and facial features, prominent brow ridges, hypertrophy of the zygomatic bones and nasolabial folds, enlarged hands and feet, rough skin with pigmentation, thickened vocal cords, and a low-pitched voice. Oral Examination: The patient had a large tongue (macroglossia) which covered the entire mouth. Edentulous jaws were wide and malformed dental arches, and marked tissue inversion of the maxillary nodes bilaterally. On palpation, there was bone protuberance with tenderness in the left buccal region. This paper presents a case report on the prosthetic rehabilitation of an edentulous patient with acromegaly using the Biofunctional Prosthetic System (BPS). Through this clinical case, we focus on the oral developmental manifestations, diagnostic process, and prosthodontic treatment strategies for patients with acromegaly. This study highlights the importance of early recognition and management of oral and dental complications in acromegaly patients and underscores the role of these manifestations as potential diagnostic indicators of the disease for clinicians.
