Mechanical And Antibacterial Study Of Modified Denture Resins

Aim or purpose: Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is widely used in dentistry for denture bases, temporary crowns, restorations, and implant guides. However, it has poor abrasion resistance, insufficient strength, and is prone to microbial adhesion. Therefore, it is very important to synergistically improve the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of PMMA. The aim of this study was to synergistically enhance the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of PMMA by incorporating boron nitride nanosheets/metallic acid (BNNS/GA) nanocomposites. Materials and methods: Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to guide the synthesis of BNNS/GA nanosystems. The BNNS/GA nanosystems are characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). BNNS/GA/PMMA composites are prepared by incorporating BNNS/GA nanosystems into PMMA at different concentrations. The mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, water absorption, solubility, biocompatibility and antimicrobial properties are then evaluated for both pure PMMA and BNNS/GA/PMMA composites. Results: TEM, AFM, Raman, XRD and FTIR analyses confirm successful BNNS/GA synthesis. Incorporating 1.2 wt% BNNS/GA enhances PMMA's flexural strength (51.2%), modulus (66.2%), impact strength (45.8%), and wear resistance (1.8×). The composite maintains good biocompatibility while achieving 97.1% antimicrobial efficiency, retaining 93.1% after 28-day aging. Conclusions: The BNNS/GA/PMMA system synergistically enhances both mechanical and antimicrobial properties of PMMA, demonstrating a novel strategy combining 2D nanomaterials with 0D molecules for denture resin improvement.
