Digital Guide-Assisted Anterior Aesthetic Layered Resin Restoration

This case report presents a novel digital guide-assisted technique for anterior aesthetic layered resin restoration, addressing challenges such as technical sensitivity and aesthetic unpredictability in traditional methods, offering an innovative solution for dental defect rehabilitation. An 18-year-old male presented with fractured maxillary incisors (teeth 12, 21) post-trauma and discoloration in adjacent tooth 11. Clinical examination revealed residual crowns in 12 and 21, percussion sensitivity, and widened periodontal ligament on radiography. Treatment included: (1) fiber post-core resin crown restoration for tooth 21; (2) digital guide-assisted layered resin restoration for tooth 12. Workflow: intraoral scanning (3Shape™ Trios, 3Shape A/S) generated a digital model for tooth 12; software-designed guides facilitated precise layering of 3M™ Filtek™ composite resin (3M™, 3M Company); final polishing achieved functional and aesthetic outcomes. Conventional layered resin restorations rely heavily on operator skill, often resulting in insufficient compaction and prolonged chairside time. This technique utilizes digital guides to standardize resin layer thickness and morphology, improving marginal adaptation and aesthetics. Key considerations include managing resin flow and volume during guide application to prevent microleakage. Compared to literature, this method reduces technical variability, though guide adaptability for complex cases requires further optimization Digital guide technology enhances precision, efficiency, and reproducibility in anterior aesthetic resin restorations, lowering technical barriers. Future integration of dynamic guide systems could expand its applicability, advancing minimally invasive aesthetic dentistry.

Abstract

This case report presents a novel digital guide-assisted technique for anterior aesthetic layered resin restoration, addressing challenges such as technical sensitivity and aesthetic unpredictability in traditional methods, offering an innovative solution for dental defect rehabilitation. An 18-year-old male presented with fractured maxillary incisors (teeth 12, 21) post-trauma and discoloration in adjacent tooth 11. Clinical examination revealed residual crowns in 12 and 21, percussion sensitivity, and widened periodontal ligament on radiography. Treatment included: (1) fiber post-core resin crown restoration for tooth 21; (2) digital guide-assisted layered resin restoration for tooth 12. Workflow: intraoral scanning (3Shape™ Trios, 3Shape A/S) generated a digital model for tooth 12; software-designed guides facilitated precise layering of 3M™ Filtek™ composite resin (3M™, 3M Company); final polishing achieved functional and aesthetic outcomes. Conventional layered resin restorations rely heavily on operator skill, often resulting in insufficient compaction and prolonged chairside time. This technique utilizes digital guides to standardize resin layer thickness and morphology, improving marginal adaptation and aesthetics. Key considerations include managing resin flow and volume during guide application to prevent microleakage. Compared to literature, this method reduces technical variability, though guide adaptability for complex cases requires further optimization Digital guide technology enhances precision, efficiency, and reproducibility in anterior aesthetic resin restorations, lowering technical barriers. Future integration of dynamic guide systems could expand its applicability, advancing minimally invasive aesthetic dentistry.
