Application Of Limosilactobacillus Reuteri In S-ECC Children Before Treatments

To investigate the oral colonization potential of exogenous probiotic bacterium Limosilactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) of untreated severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) children and the effect on the microorganisms in oral plaque. 21 Children with S-ECC aged 3 to 5 years old who attended the pediatric stomatology department of Stomatological Hospital from May to September in 2023 were enrolled and randomly allocated to two groups: Test group(8 children) was received L. reuteri lozenges, for 28 days prior to general anesthesia and control group didn’t get any intervention. The treatment of full-mouth dentistry was completed under general anesthesia for both groups. The oral conditions of all the children were recorded before and 7 days, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months and 6 months after the treatment. and the recurrence of caries was counted; caries-free supragingival plaques were collected from all the time points. The microbial community structure and abundance of the plaques before and after treatment were analyzed using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing technology. After 28 days of intervention, the relative abundance of L.reuteri in plaque peaked (p<0.05) and gradually decreased thereafter. After completed treatments of all decayed tooth, L.reuteri can still be detected in plaque. The application of L.reuteri reduces the risk of re-caries after general anesthesia treatment of dentistry in S-ECC children.
