Open-Source Software For Complex Orthognathic Surgery
This case report presents the successful management of a patient with an edentulous upper arch treated through a multidisciplinary approach involving orthognathic surgery, custom-made patient-specific implants (PSI), and an implant-supported bridge. The treatment plan was designed and executed using open-source software, Blender, for precise surgical planning and the fabrication of a custom PSI to address severe maxillary atrophy and malocclusion. The patient with asymmetry of the mandible came with edentulous atrophic maxilla. The lower anterior teeth were not in ideal position for orthognathic surgery. CBCT scan, intraoral scan and facial scan was done and the data was merged in an open soft software for virtual treatment objective planning, and preparing of the temporary upper denture, custom made cutting guide and custom-made bone fixation plates. We had a successful outcome with a more symmetrical face with his teeth restored using implant supported bridge. This case highlights the potential of open-source software in complex dental rehabilitation, offering a cost-effective and highly customizable solution for edentulous patients with significant anatomical challenges. The integration of digital planning, custom implants, and implant-supported prosthetics resulted in a predictable and patient-specific outcome, demonstrating the evolving role of digital tools in modern dentistry. Open-source software and digital records can be used to address the most challenging orthognathic and dental rehabilitation cases.
