Early Prosthodontic Intervention For Hed-Associated Congenital Anodontia

This report details the diagnostic and therapeutic management of a male infant with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED)-induced congenital anodontia. A male child born on November 16, 2020, was diagnosed with "hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia" at another hospital due to recurrent high fever . On May 23, 2023, the patient presented to our hospital with complete absence of maxillary and mandibular dentition, mucosa-bound knife-edged alveolar ridges. Parents were educated about the necessity and challenges of early oral rehabilitation, and instructed to train the child's swallowing/occlusal movements at home. CBCT on October 31, 2024, revealed absence of primary tooth germs, with only permanent tooth germs (13, 16, 23, 26, 36, 46) present. On March 6, 2025, combining digital scanning with custom trays and functional impressions, vertical dimension and centric occlusion were determined via facial harmony method. Due to effective parental training, the child cooperated throughout treatment. Complete dentures were successfully delivered on March 27, 2025. The case provides critical insights to restore psychosocial well-being in affected children. This case establishes a standardized diagnostic-prosthetic protocol for managing congenital anodontia in preschoolers, providing critical insights to restore psychosocial well-being in affected children.
