Elastodontic Treatment For Adolescent Deep Overbite: A Case Study

This report evaluates the effectiveness of elastodontic appliances in treating a 10-year-old boy with Class II division 2 malocclusion characterized by deep overbite, maxillary incisor lingual inclination, mandibular retrusion, and airway constriction. Following 12 months of therapy with regular monthly adjustments, significant improvements were observed. The patient achieved proper overbite correction with noticeable changes in dental and skeletal relationships. Cephalometric analysis demonstrated improved maxillary incisor angulation (U1-SN angle increased from 134.47° to 102.4°) and mandibular advancement (SNB angle increased from 77.99° to 102.82°). The ANB angle decreased from 5.99° to 5.28°, indicating better jaw harmony. Additionally, airway dimensions increased(upper airway volume increased from 10,105mm ³ to 14,707mm ³), suggesting enhanced respiratory function. This case highlights three key benefits of elastodontic treatment: effective deep overbite correction, favorable skeletal changes, and airway improvement. The appliance provided a comfortable, non-invasive alternative to traditional orthodontic methods while addressing both occlusal and airway concerns. These findings support the use of elastodontic devices in growing patients with similar malocclusions, though further research is needed to assess long-term stability. The successful integration of occlusal correction and airway enhancement in this treatment approach demonstrates its potential for comprehensive adolescent orthodontic management.

Abstract

This report evaluates the effectiveness of elastodontic appliances in treating a 10-year-old boy with Class II division 2 malocclusion characterized by deep overbite, maxillary incisor lingual inclination, mandibular retrusion, and airway constriction. Following 12 months of therapy with regular monthly adjustments, significant improvements were observed.
