Evaluation Of The Effects Of L. Plantarum On Periodontitis
To study the preventive and therapeutic effects of clinical isolates of L.plantarum on experimental periodontitis. Probiotics were isolated from healthy infant feces and their physiological, biochemical, and oral probiotic properties were evaluated in vitro. An experimental periodontitis rat model was created using silk ligature ligation. The 24 rats were divided into three groups (8 rats each): normal control, periodontitis, and *Lactobacillus plantarum* groups. The *Lactobacillus plantarum* group received a suspension of *Lactobacillus plantarum* (10^8 CFU/mL in 2% CMC-PBS) applied to periodontal pockets at 0.2 mL/day, 6 days/week. The normal control and periodontitis groups received an equal volume of 2% CMC-PBS. After 7 weeks of treatment, periodontal clinical indicators and histopathological assessments of periodontal tissues were analyzed. A strain of Lactobacillus plantarum SLH was isolated. It showed antimicrobial activity against P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum (p<0.05) and tolerated high lysozyme concentrations. The strain also reduced inflammatory factors in cell models (p<0.0001).In animal studies, the L. plantarum group exhibited improved periodontal parameters (gingival bleeding index and probing depth, p<0.0001). Micro-CT showed reduced bone resorption (p<0.001), and HE staining revealed significantly reduced inflammation in periodontal tissues. L.plantarum SLH has a significant alleviating effect on experimental periodontitis and shows potential as an adjunctive treatment for periodontitis.
