Management Of Complications Caused By Misplaced Implants: Surgical Considerations
Successful dental implant therapy relies on accurate diagnosis, careful planning, and precise surgical technique. This case report and comprehensive review highlight the severe complications caused by improper implant placement, particularly when implants migrate into the maxillary sinus, leading to persistent symptoms and failure of restorative procedures. A 68-year-old female patient presented with a history of three implants placed at previous clinic. One implant had migrated into the maxillary sinus in upside-down position, while the other two were malpositioned, resulting in immediate prosthesis failure. The patient reported persistent sinusitis symptoms and localized pain. A comprehensive evaluation, including three-dimensional radiographic imaging, was performed to assess the extent of complications. The necessary surgical intervention was conducted to remove the implant within the sinus as well as the malpositioned implants. Following sufficient healing period, a removable prosthesis was prepared according to the patient’s preference. During six-month and one-year follow-ups, the patient exhibited uneventful healing with no recurrence of symptoms. Implant placement requires meticulous planning and specialized surgical skills to prevent incorrect indications and possible complications. Misplaced implants, especially those migrating into the maxillary sinus, can lead to chronic sinusitis, infection, and prosthetic failure. Proper preoperative evaluation, surgical expertise and interdisciplinary collaboration are crucial in preventing and managing such complications. This case highlights the importance of individualized treatment planning, comprehensive preoperative assessment, and collaboration between dental specialists to optimize patient outcomes.
