Antimicrobial Effects of Radix Dipsaci In Vitro

The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effect of Radix Dipsaci, a Chinese medicine, on oral flora in order to evaluate its application prospect in oral health maintenance and to provide a scientific basis for the application of Chinese medicine in the prevention and treatment of oral diseases. 1) The antibacterial performance of Radix Dipsaci liquid was evaluated by measuring the Zone of inhibition against Porphyromonas gingivalis, Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus.2) The antibacterial activity of Radix Dipsaci liquid was evaluated by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of Radix Dipsaci liquid against Porphyromonas gingivalis, Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. 1) Zone of inhibition: At 2.5 g/mL, Radix Dipsaci produced inhibition zones of 22 mm (S. mutans, S. aureus) and 23 mm (P. gingivalis). At 1.25 g/mL, zones measured 18 mm (S. mutans, S. aureus) and 17 mm (P. gingivalis). (2)Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC): Radix Dipsaci's Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) for Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus were 0.0391g/ml and 1.25g/ml, respectively; the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for Porphyromonas gingivalis was 0.0391g/ml, and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) was 0.15625g/ml. Radix Dipsaci can inhibit the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. Provides new ideas to prevent and treat oral-related diseases, especially periodontal disease and dental caries.
