Age-Related Changes In Lower Facial Skeletal Height

To investigate age-related changes in the lower third skeletal facial height and provide reference data for prosthodontic vertical dimension determination. CBCT scans meeting inclusion criteria (≥1 pair of contralateral molars) were selected. Lower facial height was measured on mid-sagittal planes as the vertical distance between the anterior nasal spine and menton. Data were stratified by sex and age (10-year intervals). 1.Males (n=1,053): Mean height: 67.1±3.6 mm. Progressive increase with age: 57.2±1.7 mm (18-27y) to 69.4±3.7 mm (78-87y). 2.Females (n=1,109): Mean height: 58.3±2.9 mm. Gradual increase from 55.4±7.2 mm (18-27y) to 59.3±3.1 mm (78-87y). 3.Sex-based differences were statistically significant (P<0.001). Lower facial skeletal height increases with aging and exhibits sex-specific patterns. Integrating age and sex improves clinical determination of vertical dimension.

Abstract

To investigate age-related changes in the lower third skeletal facial height and provide reference data for prosthodontic vertical dimension determination. Lower facial height was measured on mid-sagittal planes as the vertical distance between the anterior nasal spine and menton. Gradual increase from 55.4±7.2 mm (18-27y) to 59.3±3.1 mm (78-87y). 3.Sex-based differences were statistically significant (P<0.001). Lower facial skeletal height increases with aging and exhibits sex-specific patterns. Integrating age and sex improves clinical determination of vertical dimension.
