Combined PDT And Laser Therapy For PVL: A Case Report
Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is a particularly aggressive oral precancerous condition known for its heightened likelihood of evolving into invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as a prevalent treatment method for various oral ailments, particularly oral potentially malignant disorders. A60-year-old female presented with a white plaque on her left buccal persisting for approximately four years, devoid of pain or discomfort. Oral inspection revealed an irregular white plaque measuring 50*50 mm² with well-defined borders. Following a biopsy histopathological examination confirmed oral leukoplakia without dysplasia. Two sessions of PDT using 5-Aminolevulinic acid as the photosensitizer alongside laser therapy were administered fortnightly. A complete remission was achieved, with no recurrence observed over the subsequent three months. The management of PVL poses a significant global challenge. The case study highlights the efficacy of combining PDT with laser therapy in the treatment of PVL, showcasing promising prospects for the management of high-risk oral leukoplakia.
