Patient-Reported Outcomes Following Periodontal Treatment In Plaque-Induced Gingivitis
To investigate the effects of periodontal therapy on clinical parameters, oral health-related quality of life(OHRQoL) and dental anxiety(DA) in healthy individuals and patients with varying degrees of gingivitis. Ninety participants (30 healthy controls, 30 with localized gingivitis, 30 with generalized gingivitis) underwent scaling, polishing and oral hygiene instruction at baseline and monthly follow-ups until achieved periodontal health. Clinical parameters (bleeding on probing [BOP], gingival index [GI] and plaque index [PLI]) and patient-reported outcomes(the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) for OHRQoL and the Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale (C-DAS) for DA) were recorded at baseline (pre-treatment, T0), 1 month after treatment(T1), and achieving periodontal health(T2). Significant differences in BOP, GI and PLI were observed at T1 and T2 in all groups (p<0.05). At T2, generalized gingivitis exhibited significantly higher BOP, GI and PLI(p<0.05) values than the healthy controls. Most OHIP-14 items in generalized gingivitis showed significant reductions at T2 compared to T0(p<0.05),no significant changes were noted between T1 and T0(p>0.05). In localized gingivitis, physical pain and total OHIP-14 scores demonstrated significant differences at both T1 and T2(p<0.05). Significant reductions were observed in C-DAS scores at both T1 and T2(p<0.05) in generalized gingivitis. Periodontal therapy not only restored periodontal health but also improved OHRQoL in both localized and generalized gingivitis, while significantly reducing DA in generalized cases.
