Evaluating Teledentistry For Calculus Detection By Intraoral Scans And Photograph
To evaluated the feasibility of identifying calculus in teledentistry screening through a three-dimensional model of intraoral scanning (IOS) or clinical intraoral photographs. This was a blinded, single-visit observational study. Each participant underwent a clinical visual examination in addition to a three-dimensional digital model obtained using IOS and intraoral photographs taken with a single-lens reflex camera, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of the 2 teledentistry screening methods were calculated to assess their validity and reliability compared with the "gold standard" clinical visual examination.Ethics committee approval has been obtained A total of 1306 dentinal surfaces from 24 subjects were included in this study during the last 2 years. Both methods showed extremely high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy (≥85%). In particular, the IOS method showed similar sensitivity for calculus diagnosis in anterior and posterior teeth, whereas the photographic method showed significantly lower sensitivity for calculus diagnosis in posterior teeth than in anterior teeth., 三pecificity was higher than sensitivity on the buccal surface, and sensitivity was higher than specificity on the lingual-palatal surface. Moreover, participants reported a significantly higher level of comfort with the IOS method than the photographic method (p<0.001). Both two methods can accurately detect calculus at the gingival margin and can be applied to teledentistry screening. Furthermore, IOS is a promising tool for teledentistry calculus identification because of its high accuracy and efficiency in the posterior region and high patient comfort.
