Rapid and Selective Detection of Linalool Using Solidly Mounted Resonators for Plant Health Monitoring

This work presents the first demonstration of linalool detection using solidly mounted resonators (SMRs) functionalized with ethyl cellulose (EC). A dual-sensor platform was developed comprising a CMOS-compatible solidly mounted resonator (SMR) together with commercial SMR, housed within a 3D-printed sensing chamber and a commercial temperature sensor for real-time temperature compensation. Both SMR sensors exhibited concentration-dependent responses consistent with the Freundlich isotherm model. The commercial SMR achieved a sensitivity of 15 kHz/ppm with a response time of 228 s, whilst the custom SMR showed a lower sensitivity of 1.03 kHz/ppm but a faster response time of 45 s. Both SMR devices exhibited strong selectivity towards linalool over other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as d-limonene, trans-2-hexenal, and ethanol. These results highlight the potential of low-power SMR-based platforms for low-cost, real-time, non-invasive monitoring of plant health and broader VOC sensing applications.
