The Persuasive Potential of Futurum I Statements in German-Language Political Discourse

The article is devoted to the study of the persuasive potential of statements with futurum I forms in the context of the implementation of persuasive strategy in political discourse. Persuasivity is a fundamental characteristic of political discourse and in pragmalinguistic studies it is studied in the context of the implementation of persuasive strategy. Among the means of verbalization of persuasive strategy, a special place is occupied by futurum I forms, which, due to the combination of temporal and modal properties, can express the addresser’s intention to induce the addressee to perform certain actions or convince him of the need to implement them, which is the essence of persuasive strategy. The empirical material of the study shows that statements with futurum I forms are indirect speech acts, the illocutionary force of which lies in the appeal, incentive, assurance, promise, forecasting. Taking into account pragmatic factors and contextual features of the communication flow allows us to discover and describe the illocutionary force of these speech acts, as well as to justify the choice of statements with futurum I to provide maximum impact. Identifying the pragmatic potential of statements with futurum I forms will allow us to penetrate deeper into the nature of speech influence and develop effective methods of persuasion, as well as tools to counteract speech manipulation.
