Learning from Global Models: A Roadmap for Implementing One Nation One Election in India

The concept of One Nation, One Election (ONOE) envisions enhanced political stability, reduced expenditure, and improved administrative efficiency by aligning the election cycles of India’s Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. This paper explores international models, achievements, and challenges associated with conducting simultaneous elections in federal democracies. Drawing on comparative experiences from countries that have adopted electoral synchronization, it critically assesses the feasibility and relevance of such systems within India’s unique political, social, and federal framework. Particular emphasis is placed on the management of electoral logistics, maintaining a balance between national cohesion and federal autonomy, and mitigating the risks of political homogenization. The study integrates these global insights to outline a strategic roadmap for India’s electoral reform—highlighting technological innovations, constitutional amendments, and adaptable policy mechanisms for sustainable implementation. While upholding electoral integrity and regional diversity, this framework aspires to meet the democratic aspirations of contemporary India. Ultimately, the paper advances a nuanced understanding of ONOE and provides valuable recommendations for policymakers seeking to navigate India’s complex political landscape and realize the vision of synchronized elections.
