An Analysis of Ceiling Jet Velocity Characteristics in Horizontal Corridors during Fires

In this study, the velocity characteristics of ceiling jets propagating through horizontal corridors, serving as evacuation routes during large-scale building fires, were analyzed using experiments, simulations, and a theoretical approach based on conservation laws. A correlation was developed through dimensionless analysis to ensure applicability across different spatial scales. The validity of the proposed equation was assessed by comparing it with existing velocity prediction methods for tunnel fires as well as experimental data from corridor fire tests conducted at multiple scales. While the correlation derived in this study tended to predict higher velocities than models developed for road tunnel ceiling jets, it demonstrated relatively high accuracy when compared with experimental results from corridor fires across different scales.
